8. Seizure (Virals Book 2) by Kathy Reichs

Seizure (Virals Book 2) by Kathy Reichs
Published November 2011 Random House

From the publisher:

Ever since Tory Brennan and her friends rescued Cooper, a kidnapped wolf pup with a rare strain of canine parvovirus, they’ve turned from regular kids into a crime solving pack! But now the very place that brought them together—the Loggerhead Island Research Institute—is out of funding and will have to shut down. That is, unless the Virals can figure out a way to save it! So when Tory learns of an old Charleston legend about a famous she-pirate, Anne Bonney, whose fortune was never found, she can’t believe her luck—buried treasure is exactly what she needs to save the Institute on Loggerhead! Trouble is, she and her friends aren’t the only ones looking for it. And this time, the Virals’ special powers may not be enough to dig them out of trouble…

For those of you who read Kathy Reichs' adult novels, or are a fan of the TV show Bones, the name Brennan will be familiar to you.  In Kathy Reichs' series for teenage readers we meet Tory, Temperance Brennan's neice.

Seizure is the second book in this series (Book 1 Virals), but it's good to know that you don't have to have read the first one, to enjoy it.  There is a brief rundown at the beginning to get readers up to speed on the events that caused the four characters to become Virals.
Just like the novel I wrote about yesterday, here we have another mystery, this one has tunnels too!  The story is far fetched (even the characters think so), four teenagers are searching for a long lost piarate treasure to save the Loggerhead Island Research Institute, which in turn will save their homes, and keep them together. With a little help from their wolf like abilities they sneak out, steal a map, follow clues, explore tunnels, figure out who to trust, avoid being shot, help someone escape from a psychiatric facility, all in the hope of finding a treasure that may or may not even exist. There's a little bit of Indiana Jones, a little bit of National Treasure and more than a little bit of The Goonies (which even the characters acknowledge) in this book, so if you like a good mystery, a bit of danger, with a touch of mtutant freak thrown in for good measure, this one is for you.

** Anne Bonny was a real pirate, much of the information in the book about her life is based on historical evidence.  The missing treasure however, is pure fiction.
