Published August 2012 Random House (Corgi Children)

From the publisher:
Who do you run with? It's always tough being the new kid in town. And even worse when you have to live with your grandfather in the middle of the forest. But when Katelyn starts at Wolf Springs High she realizes that her new life might not be so bad. There's the enigmatic Trick, who is always there to protect her. And Cordelia Fenner and her irresistible cousin seem extra friendly. Katelyn suspects that there is more to the Fenner Family than meets the eye. But why is she so drawn to them? And in a town full of secrets, who can she trust?

If you lean more towards Team Jacob than Team Edward, then this may be the book for you.

There are quite a few similarities between this books and Twilight.  The main character Katelyn, has been forced to leave her hometown of LA after her Mother dies (her Father is already dead) to live with her Grandfather in the middle of the Arkansaswilderness, in a small town called Wolf Springs.  Her arrival coincides with the recent death of a teenage girl who was mauled by a wild animal in the woods, and she has strict instructions to always come home before dark.  Already you get a pretty good idea of what’s to come.

To make her transition to this small town easier, there is of course a boy, Trick.  He has been give the job of chauffeur, but early on he makes it clear that he doesn’t want to be the ‘friend’, he wants to date her.  So far so good, and then Katelyn meets the mysterious Justin Fenner, with whom she has an instant and powerful connection.  This is not a good thing, as Justin has a girlfriend.  So we have two potential love interests, we can add a new best friend.  This is Cordelia Fenner (cousin of the aforementioned Justin) she seems really great, but the more time Katelyn spends with her, the more she sees how odd Cordelia’s family are.  Cordelia’s sisters are highly competitive, they kiss peoples cheeks when they greet them (not common on Arkansas), and her Father seems to be overly controlling.

Not long after Katelyn’s arrival another girl is killed, and Katelyn starts to ask more questions, and finds it difficult to get a straight answer.  Coming home alone (and at night) from her first party Katelyn gets a flat tyre, and has no choice but to get out and change it.  This is when Katelyn comes face to face with what has been killing the girls, and life as she knows it changes for ever!

If you are a Buffy fan (which I am) you may recognise the name Nancy Holder, she wrote a number of spin off novels based on the Buffy TV series.  I will admit that I really liked this book.  It may not be a ‘life changer’ but then so few books are, but it was a great easy way to wile away a few hours.  It is the first in a new series, and as we are left with a small revelation at the end of this one, I will be sure to have the next book on my reading pile.
