Fated by Sarah Alderson
Published January 2012 Simon & Schuster
From the publisher:
What happens when you discover you aren't who you thought you were? When the person you love is the person who must betray you. If fate is already determined - can you fight it? Lucas Gray is half Shadow Warrior, half human, and a member of the Brotherhood - a group of assassins tasked with killing the last purebred Hunter on Earth before she can fulfil a dangerous prophecy. The Hunter's name is Evie Tremain. Evie Tremain is seventeen-years-old, a waitress and has just discovered she is the last in a long line of demon slayers - and an unwilling participant in a war between Hunters and unhumans that has raged for the last thousand years.
OK, so I think it will be impossible for me to, get through a month without some kind of paranormal teenage fiction creeping in.
Here we have Evie, a 17 year old waitress who works two jobs, just so she can get out of this small town and move to New York. Everything changes when she is attacked behind the diner where she works by a scorpion demon, a demon with an acid touch and a vampire.
It turns out that Evie is the last in a long line of Hunters, destined to keep the world safe from the unhumans. Not simply a Hunter, but the White Light, the only surviving child of two pure Hunters, it is her destiny to put an end to the war between humans and the unhumans.
The good thing about this book is that you don't have to be a 'paranormal romance lover' to like this book. There's still a bit of romance, but there's also a lot of action, and even some humour thrown in for good measure. The other thing I liked is the references to Buffy and Twilight, when you have such similarities in your story line, to me, it's better to acknowledge it.
