126. The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems

The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems
Published May 2012 Walker Books

From the publisher:

Duckling gets a cookie? What do you mean DUCKLING GETS A COOKIE?! Pigeon is NOT happy about this. Not one little itty bit.

There are not many people out there who don't love the pigeon books, so the day a new one hits the shelves is an exciting day indeed.

The comedy starts before the story even starts, when (on the title page) the pigeon comments that he doesn't like sound of this title one bit.

As the title suggests, the duckling asks for a cookie, and the duckling gets a cookie (with nuts).  When the pigeon finds out that all the duckling did was ask for something and then got it, he starts raving in a way that only this pigeon can.  He asks for things all the time, 'to drive the bus', 'to stay up late' and 'for a puppy' to name a few of the things we know about, but there are a lot more things that this pigeon didn't get...and he is not happy!

from The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?

One of the things I really like about this book is that it doesn't spell out WHY the duckling got the cookie.  It's right there in the story...the duckling says 'please', but the pigeon never figures that part out.  I know not all books have to be used as a teaching tool, and this one most definitely will be loved by children regardless, but it would be a good one to use in the classroom, seeing if the children can figure out why the duckling got what he wanted..  I also like the ending, that shows the duckling is not quite as sweet and selfless as he would lead us to believe he is.
